Leaders have a responsibility to ensure that organizational teams are working efficiently and collaboratively together to achieve established goals. There are many moving parts to creating a high performing team. Below are those that are key ingredients:

Cultivating Trust

Trust is a critical aspect of any successful team. Leaders can cultivate trust by being transparent, honest, and consistent in their decisions and actions. They should also ensure that team members trust each other by encouraging collaboration, fostering a positive team culture, and promoting mutual respect. As the leader you must lead by example, demonstrate integrity, and hold yourself accountable for your actions.

Communicating Effectively

Leaders must communicate clearly and effectively to ensure that team members understand their roles, responsibilities, and expectations. Encourage team members to share their ideas, feedback, and concerns. Remember, if you want your team members to listen openly to the feedback you share; you must model this behavior for them when receiving their feedback. Be open, listen attentively, and take action where warranted.

Encouraging Creativity

Creativity is essential for driving innovation and achieving organizational goals. Encourage creativity by providing team members with opportunities to brainstorm and share their ideas. Create an environment that encourages risk-taking and experimentation. Provide the necessary resources and support to help team members implement their ideas.

Setting Clear Goals

Leaders should set clear, measurable, and achievable goals for their teams. Goals should be aligned with the organization's overall objectives and should be regularly reviewed and updated as necessary. Ensure that team members understand how their individual goals contribute to the team's overall performance as well as to the organization’s mission.

Investing in Development

Investing in team development is essential for creating a high performing team. Leaders should provide team members with opportunities for training, development, and growth. Know your team members’ strengths. We don’t hire individuals for their weaknesses; so, don’t focus on those. Instead encourage team members to take ownership of the enhancement of their strengths through personal goal setting. Strategically aligning their strengths is key to the team’s success.

Creating a high performing team is a continuous process. Leaders must be committed to improving team performance and ensuring that team members are motivated, engaged, and empowered to succeed. Remember you must be present; absentee leadership never works out. Be committed; team members won’t engage if the leader is not engaged. Finally bring your best self to work each day. There is nothing more powerful in the development of your team than the example that you set for them.
